Are You visiting Snowdonia and other North Wales Beauty Spots this weekend?

Queues for Snowdon Summit
Warnings for those visiting Snowdonia over May Bank Holiday weekend

With lockdown restrictions easing, hundreds are expected to descend on North Wales’ beauty spots this Bank Holiday weekend.

But North Wales Police, local councils and Snowdonia National Park Authority have joined forces to urge people to be respectful of others and their surroundings.

It comes after last summer’s relaxing of coronavirus measures saw major issues with parking, litter and unlawful ‘fly’ camping.

Shocking scenes saw massive queues of people ignoring Covid-19 guidelines to reach Snowdon’s summit with many parking illegally.

But now, shuttle bus services have been laid on in Snowdon and Ogwen areas, and visitors are asked to pre-book parking or come at quieter times as the Indian variant continues to circulate.

People who park illegally have been warned their vehicles will be towed away.

A joint statement, released by the authorities says: “Easing of restrictions during 2020 gave us an insight to probable scenarios that might arise again in 2021 with three major issues needing to be addressed.

“We, and other green spaces across the UK, are anticipating a significantly high volume of visitors to the area over the Bank Holiday weekend – people have been in lockdown for a long time and are understandably eager to get out and enjoy some fresh air and open space again.

“However, an increase in visitors will inevitably mean more cars, more litter and more unlawful ‘fly’ camping with authorities urging the public to respect the arrangements to avoid the need for enforcement action.

“Such demands also place a strain on our resources and our communities but by working together we aim to minimise any potential negative effects whilst maximising the positive ones.”

Emyr Williams, Snowdonia National Park Authority’s Chief Executive said: “Given that our most popular car parks are full before 6.30am during the high season by working in partnership with other authorities we can provide a suitable infrastructure for the season.

“This will be provided through additional shuttle bus services in the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and Ogwen areas, temporary and permanent signage, pre-booking at Pen y Pass and a strong messaging campaign to encourage people to come during quieter times of the week and year to help spread the load.

“We need to remember that Snowdonia is a protected area where people live and work and we also recognise the countless hours the dedicated hard-working team of volunteers give to the area and appreciate their hard work and generosity.

“Over the Bank Holiday the SNPA and Snowdonia Society volunteers will again be picking up litter and providing support to help visitors make the best choices so that they can have the best time here.”

Cllr Gareth Griffith, Gwynedd Council’s environment cabinet member said: “With current travel restrictions to numerous non-UK countries, it is expected that a significant number will visit popular locations in Gwynedd and north Wales over the next few months.

“Like last year, we have been working closely with our partners to ensure measures are in place to protect our communities and to keep the public safe.

“Covid-19 has not gone away and it’s vital that the people follow the rules and respect our communities and environment.

“We encourage anyone who plans to visit Gwynedd to plan ahead and to ensure they park responsibly.

“Clear arrangements have been put in place in locations such as Pen y Pass and Ogwen to ensure that the areas are safe for everyone. Anyone who ignores these arrangements are likely to receive a fine and on some occasions, vehicles could be towed away.”

Superintendent Neil Thomas from North Wales Police said: “We continue to work closely with our colleagues across the local authorities and the National Park to help reduce the risk to walkers, cyclists and other road users.

“When restrictions were lifted last year we unfortunately saw dangerous, irresponsible and illegal parking which posed a risk to public safety in many of our beauty spots, including Ogwen and Pen-y-Pass.

“We appreciate that many people want to enjoy the bank holiday weekend and the predicted good weather, however it is essential that travelling to these areas does not adversely impact on others.

“So we are once again urging anybody who is considering visiting areas such as Snowdonia to be responsible and think about where they park, and to make full use of the park and ride facilities that are available.

Anybody found to be parking on the clearway or causing an obstruction will have their vehicle removed at their own expense. Patrols will continue throughout the bank holiday weekend and we’ll continue to work with our partners to ensure the rules are being followed.”

Our day started off an absolute mess. Our cruise ship anchored, we passengers were ferried to Holyhead Marina, and at... every turn we were met with failure for our vacation. No shops to really speak of were located at the marina— we needed to go into town— and the couple stores that were there (and open) were a marina goods store and a food + beverage restaurant. The three taxis we did find at the marina were two vans already booked for a large party and one taxi that refused our services so he could accept the request of a man that interrupted us and threw a fit for the taxi.We walked all over the town square, begging a taxi service for a ride and offered to pay double or to pay for the entire day, and we were refused. We finally went back to the marina, and the two vans from hours earlier were still there— after waiting for a party that never showed. We offered to pay the driver for a day’s service since their party never showed up. One of the van drivers recognized us from two hours before when we’d asked him if he could take us but had to decline for the party. So he called his boss to report the time they’d been waiting for the no-show party, and he accepted our offer for a private drive and tour for the next several hours. This incredible man is Vernon with PR Taxis. Born and raised for 52 years in Wales.Vernon took us ALL OVER Wales, showing us areas frequented by tourists but taking us to places no bus or coach would dare attempt. We saw sights so magnificent it took my breath away. We enjoyed the picturesque landscapes of rolling hills and mountain faces, Ogwen trail and Snowdonia National Park, streams and waterfalls and lakes, “The Lonely Tree,” countless sheep, castle ruins, ancient cemeteries (though we did not stop to walk them), the world’s first suspension bridge (Menai) and Britannia bridge, Caernarfon Castle, and a replica of the Tyn-y-Coed horse carriage that traveled the 250 miles or so from Holyhead to London many centuries ago.Out of all the days and excursions we’ve had during this trip— heck, out of ALL the trips and adventures we’ve had, ever!— no others even come close to the wonderful time and experiences we shared with Vernon today. When we visit Wales again— because we will be back to visit— we most certainly will contact Vernon to drive for us. It was an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to doing it again.Diolch!read more

Excellent service. I climbed Mount Snowdon and because of the timescale I would have missed my last bus back to my... place of stay..I looked up this company a couple of days prior. I spoke to a lovely gentleman and he was really professional. I called the company once again when I arrived at Snowdon to pre-book and thankfully the gentleman answered. He passed my details to a young lady who booked me in. She also was very professional with my enquiries. They were so helpful and I definitely would use their services again when I am up there again and if I need to. Thank you...🤗I think the guys name was Brandon...I think. I used the service on 21:05:2022. Thanks again.:) Guys.read more

We were a group of 9 lads doing the welsh 3000s and used PR taxis over three full days. This included pick ups and drop... offs from each mountain range, evening trips from hostel and travel to snowdonia from Manchester and Leeds at the start and end of our weekend trip. The service was 1st class, we were able to move times and plans around, always on time and we had a good laugh along the wayMy advice for trips to the snowdonia, especially in groups. Keep the car at home/or park at a local transport hub / train station and use these services. It’s very good value and hassle free and you feel better for not adding to the parking problems in the area.read more

I used PR Taxi’s twice whilst on a weeks holiday in Caernarfon. The first where I requested transport for 10. The vans... arrived on time for both the outward and return journeys. Not only did we have punctual service but a guided commentary of the local area. I also booked another taxi for 2 later on in the week and Vernon took us to the restaurant and back. Not only a punctual service but wonderful chat. Would absolutely recommend PR Tax’s if you are in the area!read more

Very hard to put into words what a fantastic experience we’ve had with PR taxis. We had a very busy schedule heading to... different Zip Worlds, Snowdon, Betws-y-coed, Restaurants & our hotel Hilton Snowdonia. Each time we were promptly picked up on schedule, very friendly drivers, flexible when we needed changes and excellent value. Especially Paul who was so friendly in the taxis, reassuring when we had a small issue with our deposit not going through and just an all round great guy and company. Highly recommended you can’t go wrong if you come to the area and use them.read more

Fantastic drivers. I fell off my bike at around midnight after a full days running on the paddy Buckley round, and had... bad injuries all over my knees. I also had a puncture that I was in no fit state to try to fix. After the car that witnessed me falling off drove by leaving me for dead, one of the PR taxi drivers came by and picked me up. Drove me to the campsite I was staying at, absolute legend as I would have been in a very bad way otherwise. Thank you to the driver which name I forget, but will always remember that night's rescue! Cheers!read more
